Each morning before school, my children play a little game as they are packing up their backpacks. My oldest (the actor of the family) pretends that he is a game show host and announces, “It’s time to plaaaaaay…what’s in your lunch?” My kids then tear into the lunchboxes that I have carefully and methodically packed (cold foods next to other cold foods, heavy items on the bottom, light items on the top – you get the idea?) and announce their approval or disapproval of the items that I have planned for their lunches.
This little game used to annoy me. Not only did the lunch items never go back into the bags exactly as I had originally placed them, but I didn’t really want to hear “yuck! I’m NOT going to eat my carrot sticks” or different variations of their discontent on a regular basis. And then something miraculous happened. I relaxed about the whole thing and started to appreciate their joy. I’m no expert on school lunches, but I have a hunch that many children pack up their brown-bag lunch in the morning without the excitement of finding out exactly what they get to eat in just a few short hours. I also realized that each day when they open up their lunchboxes they have a tangible demonstration of the love that I have for them.
This Valentine’s Day, I want to go a step beyond packing food for them – I want them to know beyond the shadow of a doubt how much I love them. I put together these Valentine’s Lunchbox Printables with blanks so that I can customize them for each of my children and celebrate who they are as individuals. There are also a few blanks included so that I can write a little personalized note that might not fit neatly into the blanks (“good luck on your math test!”).
And, because I believe in sharing good things with new friends, I’m offering these printables to you when you subscribe to this blog. What a beautiful way to start a friendship, eh? So enjoy these as my Valentine’s Day gift to you. And never miss an opportunity to tell your child ‘I Love You’.
